SAINT JOHN (CNB) – The provincial government is making an investment to help Saint John-based Moosehead Breweries Ltd. continue an ongoing modernization project.

Energy Minister Jack Keir made the announcement today during a tour of the brewery, where he was joined by Moosehead Breweries Ltd. President Andrew Oland. He was speaking on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau.

“Moosehead Breweries Ltd. has an exceptional product, and is a world player in a highly competitive market,” said Keir. “To continue to be competitive, this company needs to reduce its costs and focus on increasing efficiencies. This modernization project means Moosehead will have greater ability to ramp up production to maintain its place as a global competitor.”

The provincial government is providing a $3.5-million forgivable loan as part of Moosehead’s ongoing $35 million capital-investment program designed to improve manufacturing efficiency, to reduce energy and water consumption, to expand capacity and to update its quality-control equipment.

“Our company has been a fixture in Saint John since 1919, and for many generations, my family has consistently reinvested in our Saint John brewery,” said Oland. “Our family’s company competes against large, multi-national brewers 50 to 100 times Moosehead’s size. This financial support from the provincial government encourages Moosehead to continue investing in our brewery to help reduce costs while improving quality and providing product innovation for consumers.”

“This capital expansion project means Moosehead will continue to be a major player in this region’s economy as it works to hire local labourers, local contractors, and purchase equipment and supplies from local companies,” said Keir. “Our government is pleased to support one of the province’s most well-respected companies as it continues to improve its workplace and look for innovative ways to stay competitive.”

Saint John N.B. – Know anyone who is turning 100 in the greater Saint John area this month? Moosehead Breweries wants to help them celebrate their remarkable milestone.

As part of its tribute to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Moosehead Chairman and President P.W. Oland, creator of Alpine Lager, Moosehead Breweries Limited. will give free Alpine Lager and a birthday cake to anyone in the Saint John area who turns 100 in July. A member of the Oland family will personally deliver the cake, beer and party favours to the party.

“When you reach a significant milestone like that, you should kick up your heels a little bit and celebrate,” said Andrew Oland, president of Moosehead Breweries and the sixth-generation Oland to lead the company. “We want to help brighten up their big day.”

Please contact the brewery at 635-7087 if you are becoming a Centenarian this month or if you know anyone who is.

The local brewery and its employees are holding a week-long series of events from July 10-17 to mark the 100th anniversary of P.W. Oland’s birth and to pay tribute to his legacy. Born on July 11, 1910, P.W. Oland was the fourth generation of his family to manage the operations at Moosehead. A master brewer, he created Alpine Lager which would become, and remains, one of the most popular beer brands in the Maritimes. A successful businessman, soldier and WWII veteran, P.W. Oland was a well-known philanthropist who was active in his community, supporting a wide variety of organizations and institutions. He died in 1996. The anniversary tribute will include employee events and displays, discount sales at the Moosehead Country Store, giveaways, and a “Cheers to 100 Years” party July 16 at the Market Square Boardwalk.
Moosehead, one of Canada’s most celebrated brewers, traces its roots to 1867 and today is the only Canadian-owned major brewery. The Saint John-based company is owned and managed by New Brunswick’s Oland family, whose members represent the fifth and sixth generation to operate the business. Moosehead sells its beer throughout Canada, the United States and 15 other countries around the world.
